[Book Talk] Covert Colonialism: Governance, Surveillance and Political Culture in British Hong Kong

Join us for an exciting online book talk on Covert Colonialism: Governance, Surveillance and Political Culture in British Hong Kong. This book fills the long-standing void in the existing scholarship by constructing an empirical study of colonial governance and political culture in Hong Kong from 1966 to 1997.Using under-exploited archival and unofficial data in London and Hong Kong, it overcomes the limitations in the existing literature which has been written mainly by political scientists and sociologists, and has been primarily theoretically driven. It addresses a highly contested and timely agenda, one in which colonial historians have made major interventions: the nature of colonial governance and autonomy of the colonial polity. Three Years after receiving a lifetime achievement award from the Venice International Film Festival and releasing her epic adaptation of Love After Love, Ann Hui returns with an intimate documentary portrait of poets from Hong Kong. In a city known for its bustling trade, commerce, banking, and business, Elegies reveals the inner poetic life of Hong Kong. By exploring the work of some of the island’s most innovative writers and poets, Ann Hui also reveals an intimate and unconventional portrait of Hong Kong as a city in a state of transition. 

Ann Hui (S鞍A) is one of Hong Kong’s most celebrated filmmakers of the past four decades. A writer, director, and producer who was a central figure in the Hong Kong New Wave, Ann Hui has continued to reinvent Chinese-language cinema with films like Boat People (1982), Summer Snow (1995), The Postmodern Life of My Aunt (2006), A Simple Life (2011), The Golden Era (2014) and Love After Love (2020). As versatile as she is prolific, her body of work includes historical drama, horror, thrillers, martial arts epics, semi-autobiographical films, and documentaries. Known for her sensitive character studies, explorations of political and social issues, and literary adaptations of classic novels, Ann Hui is also one of the most decorated filmmakers of her generation, including a six time winner of Best Director at the Hong Kong Film Awards, three time winner of Best Director at the Golden Horse Awards and being honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Venice International Film Festival, New York Asian Film Festival, Hong Kong International Film Festival, and the Asian Film Awards. 

Michael Berry Professor of Contemporary Chinese Cultural Studies and Director of the Center for Chinese Studies at UCLA. A 2023 Guggenheim Fellow, he is the author/editor of ten books on Chinese literature and cinema including Speaking in Images (2006), A History of Pain (2008), Translation Disinformation, and Wuhan Diary(2022), and Voiceover: Conversations with Chinese Filmmakers (2023). He has served as a film consultant and a juror for numerous film festivals, including the Golden Horse (Taiwan) and the Fresh Wave (Hong Kong). He is also the translator of ten books, including Remains of Life(2017), Wuhan Diary (2020), Hospital (2022) and Exorcism(2022).

When Hong Kong Studies Go Global

Since the 2019 anti-extradition bill protests, the situation in Hong Kong has seen dramatical changes, and attracted global attention. As a global city, Hong Kong had close ties with the world in terms of trade, economy, and popular culture. However, with the changing political environment and the impact of the pandemic, Hong Kong's international status has been significantly compromised, and its implications deserve serious attention. Apart from the transformations of Hong Kong itself, there is also concern about whether these changes signify a new stage in China's relationship with the world, often referred to as the “new Cold War”. Meanwhile, with hundreds of thousands of Hong Kongers moving to different parts of the world, some living in a state of “exile”, discussion and related research on the identity of diasporic Hong Kongers have emerged. Against this backdrop, research networks and institutions promoting Hong Kong studies have been established around the world, as Hong Kong studies go global.

In response to these developments, the Hong Kong Studies Program at the Institute of Sociology, Academia Sinica, Taiwan, will host an academic conference on December 8, 2023, with the theme “When Hong Kong Studies Go Global”. In addition to inviting scholars who have been advancing Hong Kong studies around the world to share their experiences, we are currently seeking paper submissions and we encourage colleagues from the academic community (including graduate students) to contribute. You are also cordially invited to reserve your time to participate (registration is expected to open in mid-October).

The Institute of Sociology of the Academia Sinica was founded in 2000 with the mission to accumulate and expand sociological knowledge, by studying the organising principles, operational processes and historical change of society. It emphasises both Taiwan Studies and the study of neighbouring societies and Chinese societies at large, and seeks to advance comparative studies among different regions or societies that explore their inextricable interrelationships.

The Hong Kong Issue Studies Thematic Research Team was established in 2023 with the aim of connecting scholars concerned about Hong Kong issues, and promoting Hong Kong studies in Taiwan and its connections with the world. One of the key tasks of the team is constructing a Hong Kong Studies Database, as to enrich collections relevant to Hong Kong issues, and with that serve scholars researching Hong Kong topics.
